The Ocean City Arts Center’s Under the Boardwalk themed show is much more than a reference to the song originally recorded by The Drifters in 1964.  It is a celebration of the iconic imagery of the unappreciated underside of the walkway, with the dark totemic images of the pilings that contrast so sharply with the sunny boardwalk above, the many shadings that marine life give to the pilings, the play of light through the slats of the boardwalk down to the beach below it, etc.  In addition, the substructure of the boardwalk has provided a place of refuge for beachgoers during a sudden summer shower, a hiding place for children and their beach toys, a secure storage place for the lockboxes of the city’s various rental chair vendors, etc
