The Show...

Many of the area’s finest artists will participate in the Ocean City Arts Center’s Annual Invitational Themed Show “Chanel No. 5”, June 1 through June 30. Two receptions will be held by RSVP, as space is limited due to Covid restrictions.

The artists have been asked to paint an image that represents the Making or Marketing of the most famous perfume in the world, “Chanel No. 5. Created by Parisian fashion designer Coco Chanel (Gabrielle Bonheur, 1883-1971), the No. 5 in the name comes from samples perfumer Ernest Beaux presented to Ms. Chanel for her approval. She chose the fifth sample that he presented, thus the name Chanel No. 5. Prior to this fragrance, perfumes had borne sentimental names associated with the Victorian era. Chanel again broke tradition by choosing a simple laboratory flacon for the bottle rather than an ornate container. Chanel No. 5 quickly became the best-selling perfume in the world. Even the bottle became an icon of the 20th Century, In 1959 the Museum of Modern Art in New York honored it and soon thereafter Andy Warhol depicted it in a series of silkscreens. The making of the perfume is also exclusive. Since the mid-1980’s only the Mul family in Pagomas, France has grown jasmine and roses for Chanel. The roses are “hundred petal” roses or cabbage roses. This species is known for its clear, sweet, honeyed scent.
