Artist Statement...
Throughout Patti Speed’s life, a continuing thread has existed: transforming visual environments . From a very early age, Patti’s childhood was filled with the creation of elaborate Barbie doll houses occupying her mother’s china cabinet, scrapbooks of her furnished and landscaped home designs, and teen dreams of Broadway sets and Busby Berkley film extravaganzas.
This passion for perfecting visual environments became solidly rooted in Patti’s professional life at Lord & Taylor’s flagship store in Manhattan where she created many themed fashion and home events. Her team’s creative interpretations of New Orleans, Nantucket, Santa Fe, Savannah and other American cities boasting of unique and rich cultures, led to successful multi-dimensional promotions. These exciting endeavors allowed her to transpose the essence of food, fashion, crafts, and home goods indigenous to these locations into a rich, fulfilling shopping experience.
From Manhattan to Patti’s native Atlantic County, the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort beckoned next, where she thrived doing extravagant and intricate events. Again, transforming various empty spaces and creating all-encompassing themed events, parties and promotions for high rollers, trade groups, and private clients. Conceiving, directing, and realizing events and environments of the highest magnitude was yet another expression of Patti’s childhood dreams.
The Show...
“A painter is a choreographer of space.” - Barnett Newman
Today, Patti’s original blank canvases are filled with different visual environments. Some are merely scenes, imagined or real, with vantage points, subject matter, and textures that she is drawn to and is compelled to depict. Some are more abstract, re-imaginings of elements resulting in new environments that she feels must exist together. She is inspired by architectural elements, patterns in nature, the juxtaposition of shapes and textures, reflections and shadows, along with repetitive design elements.
Custom portraiture of persons, pets and homes creates another kind of visual environment where the setting, position or pose coordinate with the technique in capturing the essence of personality. This provides a different, but welcoming challenge in filling the canvas accurately and creatively.
All of Patti’s work is largely realistic, but not photographic, with subject matter determining the medium and technique, using pencil, acrylic paints, designer gouache, or watercolor to achieve the desired result. The excitement for the artist in creating these works is twofold. First being the conception of the “visual environment”, interaction of elements combined, proportion, placement, color. The second part is the feeling of execution, the right combination of mixed color, the consistency of the paint on the brush as it touches the canvas, the soft, smooth blur, the blend of color, the perfect fine line. Patti’s art is clearly personal, evolving from her unique vantage point, and she hopes that the viewer’s interpretation will lead to a mutual connection.
